Installing/Re-installing TCP/IP

CAUTION: You will need your original Windows 95/98 CD, disks or images on hand to complete this process!

To solve Internet networking errors such as "Dial-Up Networking could not negotiate the compatible set of network protocols..." a common solution is to re-install the networking component TCP/IP.

Begin by clicking on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel to open the Control Panel.

Double click on the Network icon.

This will bring up the Network Control Panel window.

If you have an entry called "TCP/IP" click on it once and then click on the "Remove" button.

Click on the "Add..." button.

Select Protocol and then click on the "Add..." button.

From the list of Manufacturers click on Microsoft.

From the list of Network Protocols click on TCP/IP.

Click on the "OK" button to continue.

Click on the "OK" button to save your changes.

You will probably be asked to insert your Windows 95 or Windows 98 CD so that the files can be copied onto your hard drive.

You will then be prompted to restart your computer. You will have to restart your computer to allow your changes to take effect.
